Dubbo Regional Council

The merger of Dubbo City and Wellington councils

On 12 May 2016 the Minister for Local Government, Paul Toole, announced the newly formed “Western Plains Regional” Council.

Western Plains Regional Council includes the following wards:

  1. Wellington Ward
  2. Dubbo South Ward
  3. Dubbo Central Ward
  4. Dubbo East Ward
  5. Dubbo North Ward

Stronger more efficient councils will work harder for residents and deliver better services and infrastructure like roads, parks, playgrounds and sporting facilities.

  • Each new council will receive up to $15 million to invest in community projects like junior sporting facilities, playgrounds and library or pool upgrades.
  • Each new council will receive up to $10 million to streamline administrative processes and cut red tape. (Unspent funds may be redirected to community projects)
  • Ratepayers, in new council areas, will have their rates protected against future increases, meaning they will pay no more for their rates than they would have under their old council for 4 years.

Elections for new councils will take place on 9 September 2017. Details of the new council are contained in the proclamation.

With the funding provided by the NSW Government, the Council has funded community projects and major projects. Details of these projects appear below. If there are no major projects listed, this means that the Council has yet to finalise the projects that will be funded.

Wellington Caves Visitor Experience Centre This project involves the development and construction of a new Visitor Experience Centre at the Wellington Caves Reserve that will provide a state of the art visitor experience. Dubbo Regional Botanic Garden Adventure Playground A new nature based adventure playground will be an exciting addition to the Dubbo Regional Botanic Garden and increase visitation rates. Plans have been developed which include a nature based playground for children, kiosk area and a senior gym to encoura $1,300,000
Dubbo Regional Botanic Garden - Carpark Funding will be used to build a gravel carpark and bus parking area to provide off street parking for visitors to the Dubbo Regional Botanic Garden. The new carpark will be on the western side of the existing internal road way to make the site more access $240,000
Wellington Pool re-construction Council is now planning for a complete rebuild of Wellington pool changing the face of the popular facility and modernising an important community asset. $3,000,000
Dubbo Aquatic Leisure Centre Aquatic Playground Families are sure to love the new Aquatic Playground planned for the Dubbo Aquatic Leisure Centre. The new feature will let young children explore and participate in aquatic play that is more than just swimming $800,000
Cameron Park Regional Playground This project will revitalise Wellington's central park which is used for a wide range of activities including markets, community events, rest and recreation. It will also provide incentive for travellers to stop and utilise the facilities such as playgrou $280,000
Geurie Multi Court Facility and Playground equipment The Geurie asphalt tennis courts will be resurfaced and converted to a multi-sport court and include hoops, backboards and line marking. There is also an opportunity to re-fence this area completing the facility $245,000
Installation of a New Gross Pollutant Trap – West Dubbo Main Drain Outfall into Macquarie River The GPT would trap items such as bottles, plastic, leaf litter and packaging. Council would have a relatively small increase in operating costs to ensure the GPTs are serviced appropriately $198,540
Moxon Park Improvements – Stuart Town This project will complete works in Moxon Park to help beautify the village. Work to be completed included a new Iron Bark rear fence, new softfall under the playground and a crushed granite walkway to link Moxon Park and Boehmes Hall $85,000
Euchareena Local Projects A new playground in Euchareena is part of the improvements to be funded in this project. Other work in the village include new Cemetery fencing with an iron bark post and rail at the entrance and graveled laneway to the public school improving safety and $84,700
